2010-2011 State Officers

President

Katy-Marie Becker

Arizona State University

Katy-Marie Becker hails from Phoenix, Arizona and has been in HOSA for three years. She is  a sophomore at Arizona State University studying for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN.) She is very involved at ASU and even helped start HOSA at ASU.  She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Obama Scholars Program, Arizona State University student government, and has received several scholarships and grants. Katy-Marie  advocates for education, has a passion for health care, and is extremely compassionate. All of these attributes have led to her becoming an AzHOSA state officer as well as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Katy is currently volunteering for Hospice and aspires to be a Registered Nurse specializing in Geriatrics or a Hospice. She has also considered getting her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to return to the university and teach; therefore, contributing to the continuation in the nursing profession. HOSA is a momentous force in Katy-Marie’s life. It has allowed her to meet new people as well as serve her community. As Thomas Carlyle once said, “a man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.” Katy would like to spend her year as AzHOSA’s State President helping all members realize their goals just as HOSA has done in the past for her.

Secretary

Selah Bratt
Thunderbird HS/GCU

Even though she just discovered HOSA in the fall of 2009 through her Health Careers Education (HCE) and Certified Nursing Assisting (CNA) class she decided to get the full experience and be a chapter officer. After an amazing year of being a member and an officer she knew that HOSA is where she wants to be.  Selah was home educated her entire life and took her first public school class her junior year in high school.  She considers herself blessed to have stumbled across the HCE class and the inspirational organization of HOSA.  Starting her freshman year in college in the fall of 2010, Selah has earned several scholarships allowing her to attend Grand Canyon University.  She is interested in majoring in nursing or physical therapy and looks forward to a bright future in the health career field. Throughout her junior high and high school years, Selah participated in many extracurricular activities such as: dance, theatre, and volleyball.  She also held a job while in high school.  For the past six years volleyball has been her main focus and she has won several awards and received scholarship offers in three states across the nation to play in college.  After being elected an AzHOSA state officer, she made the difficult decision to give up playing volleyball so that she could concentrate her energy on the amazing members of HOSA.  With helping hands and caring hearts, HOSA members stand apart.

Ashley Cowden
Thunderbird High School/ASU

Ashley Cowden just recently graduated with honors from Greenway High School and is continuing her education at Arizona State University to get a bachelors degree in nursing. Throughout her high school years, she invested a significant amount of time in choir and HOSA. The most challenging aspect of choir was fine-tuning everyone’s voices to sound as one in perfect harmony. This also applies to being a State Officer, for all officers are unique and bring diverse qualities to the table.  Furthermore, all of the state officers accomplish a great deal by supporting each other and working as one. Ashley completed the Health Careers Education course at Thunderbird High School. By completing this course, she is now eligible to take the certification test to become a nursing assistant.  After her aunt was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Ashley realized her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Pediatrics and Neonatal care are the areas of specialty she is most interested in pursuing. With hard work and dedication, Ashley received the Arizona Board of Regents Scholarship from the Department of Education. She also served as the Thunderbird HOSA Chapter President. This paved the foundation for her future in HOSA.   “HOSA has been one of the most amazing opportunities I have ever had the chance of pursuing!  It has opened the door to endless possibilities and long-lasting friendships. I wouldn’t be where I am today without HOSA!”

He enjoys life and views every moment as an opportunity. Carlos likes to provide innovative ideas and creative answers to questions and concerns, so please feel free to contact him. Tayla Brown is a senior at Maricopa High School. She has been a member of HOSA for two years. She became a member of HOSA through her Medical Assisting class at Central Arizona Valley Institute of Technology.  Something that stands out most to her about HOSA is its ability to give members tons of experience and opportunities. Her favorite quote is “Do things for passion NOT position.” Her passion for HOSA is derived from her willingness to help others. She believes that if each person does one small thing to make a difference, it can change the world.  She followed her passion and was elected the Arizona State Historian.  Tayla has a love for healthcare and journalism and hopes to inform all the members on the wonderful things that the members can do in HOSA. Post Secondary Vice President Central Region

Diana Matatova

Arizona State University

Diana Matatova is a junior at Arizona State University, pursuing a major in biology and minor in chemistry and will apply for dental school in 2011.  Diana was born in Kazakhstan, located just south of Russia, where citizens had limited access to medical needs; such as, dental care, anesthesia, and medications.  Therefore she started to explore the vast world of medicine at an early age. “Don’t wait until your ship comes in, swim out to it,” is an inspirational quote that Diana Matatova strongly lives by.  It was through HOSA, Diana was able to find her passion for dentistry. She demonstrates her interest for the world of teeth by volunteering at the VA Dental Clinic, CASS Dental Clinic for the homeless, and placing 6th at nationals in Dental Terminology. However, medicine is not her only passion, music and dancing are an equal passion. After a stressful day, music relaxes and nourishes her soul. Diana has been teaching at a dance studio for the girls and boys in her community. Jack Dillenberg, DDS, Dean of A.T Stills University Dental School, once said  “It’s not all about the tooth; a tooth is connected to a person, who is connected to a family, who is connected to a community.”  HOSA is an influential community; every member has the power to inspire another human being because of their drive, compassion, determination, and positive attitude towards one another. The networks that members build in HOSA will serve them as students and will continue to serve them throughout their professional and personal lives.
